ILLUMINATED CRIB OF MANAROLA

In the wonderful scenery of the Cinque Terre national park

Since 1976 this grandiose nativity scene has been created with life-size figures that are illuminated every evening, in December and January. The work, included in the Guinness Book of Records, was conceived and initially built by Mario Andreoli, a retired railway worker. The nativity scene is arranged on the terraces of the hill facing the village of Manarola, one of the most beautiful and photographed in the Cinque Terre. To create it, 8 km of electric cables and 17 thousand light bulbs were used to illuminate the 300 figures, made with unused or recycled materials.

OCTOPUS FESTIVAL IN TELLARO

The legend

Legend has it that in 1660 Tellaro escaped an assault by Saracen pirates at night because the bell of San Giorgio suddenly rang, awakening the inhabitants who rushed to repel the attempted raid. And who would have yanked the bell rope that ended up on the rocks? Nothing less than a big octopus ... In memory of this, on the second Sunday of August there is the traditional festival of the Tellarese-style octopus, boiled and served with cooked potatoes, olives, tomatoes, onions, parsley and oil. Or the octopus in hell so called because it was once cooked in the grill, while today it is stewed with bay leaf, marjoram, chilli, tomato and a little white wine.
